Storm Moon Welcoming the Spring Equinox
“On the Equinox, the Earth and Sun are in perfect balance and harmony, as the sun is centered between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, and centered between earth and sky. This creates a sacred cross of balancing energy that naturally harmonizes the planet and humanity.” ~Aluna Joy
This Saturday March 19th, 2011, the Full Moon is the closer to the planet Earth than it has been in 18 years, since 1993. In weather folklore and Pagan circles the Full Moon in March during the changing of the seasons is known as a Storm Moon (Seed Moon or Crow Moon). This year you will also hear it referred to as a “Supermoon” due to its close orbit to Earth. It appears up to 30% brighter and 14% larger in the sky. Like any full moon this one will effect the tides, but even more strongly. The pull of the moon does take a few days and waves will peak on Sunday and Monday.
This year the Storm Moon is welcoming in the Spring (Vernal) Equinox, also known as Ostara. Ostara, March 20, 2011, is the official first day of the Spring season and marks a time for celebration of rebirth and new life. On an Equinox the Earth’s axis is perpendicular to the sun (it is rumored you can balance an egg on its end on these days, but there is no scientific proof). The sun will rise exactly due east and set exactly due west, and travels in a straight line across the sky. This directional exactitude provides the perfect time to adjust your sundial or the feng shui in your house.
In the Spring season, night begins to fade away and our days slowly start to become longer. The sun stretches deeper into twilight before taking its rest. Take a little rest of your own today. Reflect in gratitude on the beauty the Winter season brought you and look forward to the blessings of Spring. May you have welcoming Spring weather wherever you are, and many blessings to you and yours.
